Bounce rate is one of the most important metrics in email marketing, yet it is often misunderstood. Your bounce rate is the percentage of emails not successfully delivered. A healthy rate should stay below 2% for hard bounces and below 5% for total bounces. Rates above these thresholds signal list hygiene problems that damage sender reputation.
Hard bounces occur when an email cannot be delivered for permanent reasons: the address does not exist, the domain is invalid, or the server has permanently rejected it. These addresses must be removed immediately. Configure your ESP to automatically suppress hard bounces in real time to prevent future sends to invalid addresses.
“Soft bounces are temporary delivery failures that may resolve themselves. If an address soft bounces three or more consecutive times, treat it as a potential hard bounce and remove it. Review bounce patterns to distinguish between address problems and campaign problems like content issues or excessive sending frequency.
List acquisition practices directly impact bounce rate. Purchased or scraped lists consistently produce bounce rates of 10–30% or higher. Even organically grown lists can develop high bounce rates without validation at signup. Implement email validation at signup to catch typos and disposable domains before they enter your list.
Regular list maintenance prevents bounce rate creep. Even a well-maintained list decays at 2–3% per month. Schedule quarterly list cleaning and use email verification services before major campaigns. The time invested in bounce management pays for itself through improved deliverability and lower ESP costs from a healthier list.
