Content Strategy for Email: Planning Your Editorial Calendar

Email content strategy is distinct from blog or social content strategy. Your email audience has given you direct access to their inbox, which means every send must earn its place. An editorial calendar designed specifically for email ensures you maintain quality and consistency without scrambling for content at the last minute.

Structure your editorial calendar around content pillars: three to five topic categories that map to your brand expertise and audience interests. Each pillar should have a clear purpose—educate, inspire, entertain, or convert—and a consistent format. Rotate through your pillars so no single topic dominates. Subscribers who see variety in your content are less likely to tune out or unsubscribe.

For each month, plan one major content piece (original research, deep guide, customer story) and three to four supporting pieces (curated links, quick tips, product highlights). Batch-create content monthly, writing all emails for a given week in one sitting to maintain consistent voice. Maintain a swipe file of subject lines, openings, and CTAs that performed well so you can replicate successful patterns without starting from scratch each time.

Deepen your understanding.
