Email Deliverability vs. Inbox Placement: What's the Difference?

Deliverability and inbox placement are related but distinct concepts. Deliverability refers to whether your email was accepted by the recipient's mail server. Inbox placement refers to where that accepted email was placed—the inbox, spam folder, or promotions tab. Understanding the difference is essential for correct diagnosis.

Deliverability problems are typically technical and binary. Causes include authentication failures, blacklisting, PTR record issues, or server rejection. If your delivery rate falls below 95%, you likely have a technical deliverability problem. Check your ESP's delivery reports for bounce codes and rejection reasons.

Inbox placement problems are behavioral and gradual. Your email is delivered but placed in spam due to sender reputation, content quality, or engagement signals. Unlike delivery rejection which produces an immediate error, inbox placement issues silently reduce campaign performance without obvious technical signs.

Diagnosing inbox placement requires dedicated testing tools like GlockApps or Litmus that maintain test mailboxes at major ISPs and report placement. Run inbox placement tests at least monthly. If your rate is below 90%, investigate your reputation and engagement signals immediately.

The solutions differ. Deliverability problems require technical fixes: updating DNS records, cleaning infrastructure, resolving blacklistings. Inbox placement problems require strategic fixes: improving targeting, reducing complaints, building reputation through consistent positive sending. Know which problem you are solving.
