Spam traps are email addresses created specifically to catch spammers and senders with poor hygiene. Hitting a trap immediately signals to providers that you send to unverified lists. Unlike a normal subscriber who might complain, a trap silently accepts email, making detection difficult until reputation damage is done.

There are three types. Pristine traps are addresses that never existed for legitimate signups, designed to catch harvesters. Recycled traps are abandoned addresses converted by ISPs. Typo traps are common misspellings of popular domains. Each requires different prevention strategies.

Pristine traps only enter lists through unethical acquisition. If you never purchase lists and use double opt-in, your pristine trap risk is effectively zero. Recycled traps require engagement-based pruning. A robust sunset policy removes subscribers after 90 to 180 days of inactivity.

Typo traps require email validation at signup. Real-time validation that checks domain validity, syntax, and mailbox existence catches most typo traps before they enter your list. Common examples like @gmial.com instead of @gmail.com are automatically flagged for correction.

If you hit a trap, immediate action is required. Identify how it entered your list and fix the root cause. Suppress all subscribers not engaged in 90 days. Submit to the relevant blacklist's delisting process. Implement preventive measures for the future.
