White space—or negative space—is the empty area between elements in your email design. Far from being wasted space, white space is a powerful design tool that directly affects how subscribers perceive and interact with your content. Studies in typography and user experience consistently show that generous white space improves reading comprehension by up to 20% and increases the perceived value of content. Brands that use white space effectively are perceived as more premium, trustworthy, and professional.
The most impactful use of white space is around your primary call-to-action. The CTA button should have significantly more breathing room than any other element in your email. A minimum of 40px of padding above and below the button, and 24px on each side, ensures the button is visually distinct and easy to tap on mobile. This isolation signals importance and reduces the cognitive effort required to decide whether to click. Emails with isolated, well-spaced CTAs consistently outperform those with buttons crowded against other elements.
“White space between sections creates visual hierarchy and guides the reader through your content. Use larger spacing (40–60px) between major sections to signal topic changes, and smaller spacing (16–24px) between related elements within a section. This spacing creates a visual rhythm that makes scanning effortless. Readers naturally group elements that are close together and separate those with larger gaps between them. Intentional spacing communicates the relationship between content elements without requiring a single word of explanation.
Line height and paragraph spacing are white space at the micro level. Body text with a line height of 1.5x to 1.75x the font size improves readability by preventing lines from blurring together. Paragraph spacing of at least 1.5x the line height creates clear breaks between ideas. On mobile, where screen width is limited, generous line height becomes even more critical because the eye has fewer visual anchors per line. Tight line height on a narrow screen creates a dense wall of text that discourages reading entirely.
The most common white space mistake is trying to use every pixel of screen real estate. Emails that cram content edge-to-edge feel aggressive and overwhelming. Instead, use 16–24px of padding on the left and right edges of your email container, and 32–48px of padding at the top and bottom of each section. This creates a comfortable reading experience that feels more like a designed publication than a crowded advertisement. Remember that every element you remove makes the remaining elements more powerful.
